Hey! I’m Amy, I’m 20 years old, born November 6th in Ontario, CANADA. I love love love my home country and it breaks my heart I can’t spend as much time there as I would like to because of school. I am currently in my 2nd year of University at Brigham Young University Idaho! I’m majoring in interdisciplinary studies which basically lets me combine different minors and clusters into one major, so I’ve combined a minor in Psychology and clusters in Child Development and Family Studies. I absolutely love it so far 🙂

I have the best family! but I think everyone says that! I’m the third of four children, my oldest brother is 25 and lives back home in Canada, my 23-year-old sister (and my best friend) is currently in Washington DC for an internship and my younger brother is 18 and he is almost finished with his papers to serve a 2 year LDS mission! I am super close to all my siblings and since we all live in different places across North America I’ve truly learned to appreciate any time we get to be together, which unfortunately is really only around the holidays ( with the rare moment in the summers). My parents have been married for 27 years as of February!! which is absolutely insane and I am so blessed that they are my parents.

 I've created this blog for my family relations class, to be able to share what I learn and some of my insights on family life. Although this blog is a requirement for my class, I love the idea and I can't wait to get started.

Patterns in relationships and families are always changing, and honestly, it can be hard to keep up with it all! How we as a society perceive family has changed drastically in the past few years, we now get married later, have fewer children, and the number of people living alone has even increased. Of course, all of these new trends affect families but many people don't really know how much they can affect families. My mother married my father when she was 20 and both my grandmothers also got married at 20. I turned 20 last year and the idea that my mom was married and expecting her first child when she was my age is insane to me, I feel like I can barely handle myself and adding another person to that mix sounds terrifying. Communication

Communication is key in any type of relationship and can be quite complicated. Communication is defined by the language and nonverbal signs to convey something between two or more people, it seems pretty straightforward but what can make communication so complicated is how we think to communicate can be completely different than how someone else would choose to communicate. How we communicate and how we even listen to others can vary from person to person making understanding communication and listing patterns very important in any relationship. Nonverbal Communication  It is impossible not to communicate, even silence is a form of communication. By not talking to someone about something or not talking to them all together is in a way sending the other person a message. Words are only a part of communication, just as important is the way we express those words or no words, It is even estimated that nonverbal cues make up anywhere from 50 to 80% of our communication.
